"Praise" and "Release"2 Terms You Must Know When Training Your Dog When training your dog, it is very important that you understand and have both a "Praise" word, and a "Release" word. The Praise Word The Praise word is what you say when your dog does something right. You should use this word whenever giving your dog a treat. You want your dog to relate your praise word with a reward. You do not want your praise word to be something that you say all the time. For example, i am constantly telling my dog "Good Boy" even if he hasn't done anything. In this case, i would NOT want to use that as my praise word. I could use something like "Very Nice!" for my praise word. Your praise word should only be used when your dog does something right. The Release Word The Release word is what you say to release your dog from a command. For example, if you tell your dog to sit, he should remain sitting until you say your release word. Just like your praise word, you should use something that you don't say all the time. A good release word that I use is "Done!". Many people use “Okay!” as a release word, but since that is used so often, I would recommend to decide on another release word. You would not want to accidentally release your dog from a command when you don’t mean it. For example, you are walking your dog and want to cross the street, but there is a car coming. You stop and put your dog in a “Sit!“ command. You would definitely not want to accidentally release your dog and have him run into the street.
