Training should start the actual day that your dog comes home with you!

Puppies are like little sponges. They are always learning, from the time that their eyes open and their little feet start working and they start exploring their environment. So since your puppy is learning anyway, you might as well step in and teach him what you want him to know.

Dogs are creatures of habit and routine. The question isn't whether they will get into habits, the question is whose habits will they develop--either the ones they come upon naturally, which are likely the things you don’t want, or the ones you teach them which are the things that make them wonderful companions.

Obedience training is very important for both your dog and for you!

Obedience training establishes the right relationship right from the start. When a puppy comes to live with you, he’s going from an environment where there is pack order with their brothers & sisters and mom and of course the breeder. Then when they come to live with you, if there are no other dogs already there, the puppy will look around and think “Ok cool, we get to start all over, I think maybe I’ll be in charge!”

So if you establish right away that humans are in charge and puppies aren’t, puppies are fine with that because dogs by nature are either leaders or followers and we really don’t want our dogs thinking that they’re the leaders of the pack. So you need to start teaching your puppy things like:

dog training tips guidingGuiding him out of trouble by using a leash in the house to keep him with you

dog training tips gatesUsing baby gates and crates to keep him confined when you can't watch him(and to keep him out of trouble)

dog training tips resourcesAnd really important--Teaching him right away that you control the resources that are important to him. If you give him those things for free it’s pretty natural for him to think “humans are my servants and I get what I want!“.

So if you teach him actually that he has to work for the things that he values, meaning you teach him to sit and then require him to sit before you give him his meals, before you give him treats, before you give him some affection and attention, then it’s almost like teaching a little kid to say please, and it really does work.

Not only does it teach him obedience commands, but it teaches him how to use those commands to get the things he wants from you in a way that you find enjoyable, rather than jumping all over you, and barking at you, and biting you to get attention.

Remember This Secret Dog Training Tip:
Once you’re the leader, you’ll stay the leader!

…as long as you’re consistent setting up rules that are reasonable and teaching him how to obey those rules. Once the routines are set, unless you change them, your puppy is not going to change them because he’s pretty much okay with them.

It’s kind of one of the little secrets that dogs don’t want you to know!

A dog doesn’t really care how he gets what he wants, so if you teach him that the best way to get what he wants is to sit and stay, and look adorable, then he’s cool with that. On the other hand, if he thinks he can get what he wants by being annoying and barking, then there is no reason for him to stop barking and being annoying.

If you’re not happy with the way your dog behaves, and you want to change that you have to change the way you interact with him. Then once you change your interactions he’ll pick up on that and think “Oh ok, that’s the new rule“. And he’s actually fine with it either way, but you probably want him to do the things that you want him to do rather then the things he comes up with on his own.
